Strict Regulation and Enforcement of Therapeutic E-Cigarette Products in Australia
Australian TGA director, Prof Tony Lawler, emphasizes quality and safety regulations for therapeutic e-cigarette products.

According to a report by Pledge Times on August 6, Professor Tony Lawler, director of the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia, emphasized during a meeting that the Therapeutic Goods Order 100 will ensure the quality and safety of therapeutic e-cigarette products. He acknowledged the challenges pharmacists face when evaluating unregistered products, and highlighted that regulatory reforms and enhanced border control measures help manage imported products. These products must be regulated as therapeutic goods, which is why they are not sold in retail environments.

He assured pharmaceutical professionals that the responsibility for ensuring the safety of e-cigarette products to the public does not solely rest on community pharmacists.

He also emphasized strict control over the concentration, flavor, and color of e-cigarettes, and pointed out that e-cigarettes are being withdrawn from retail environments to ensure they are managed by health professionals. He stressed that only e-cigarette products that meet TGA standards can be imported and sold in Australia.

According to reports, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and the Queensland Department of Health recently conducted a two-day joint enforcement operation, seizing over 10,000 nicotine pouches and hundreds of illegal e-cigarette products. The confiscated e-cigarettes are suspected of violating the new commercial possession laws under the Therapeutic Goods and Other Legislation Amendment (E-cigarette Reform) Act, which came into effect on July 1st. These laws prohibit Australian retailers from providing any e-cigarette products, even with a prescription, and prohibit the possession of e-cigarettes in retail premises.
