UK Environment Ministry Requires Online Markets and E-Cigarette Manufacturers to Share Electronic Waste Recycling Costs
The UK government announced that online marketplaces like Amazon and eBay must share e-waste recycling costs with producers.

On December 10, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in the UK issued a press release stating that online marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay, as well as e-cigarette manufacturers, will now be required to bear more of the costs of recycling electronic waste, including items such as toasters and hair curlers. This move aims to create a level playing field for British domestic companies that currently bear the majority of the costs for collecting and processing electronic waste.

The Department of Environment has pointed out that 100,000 tons of household appliances are discarded in the UK every year. The new policy will for the first time ensure that the burden of these costs is not disproportionately placed on UK retailers.

According to government plans, the proposal will involve consultation, and online marketplaces will be required to register with the Environment Department and report sales data of their overseas sellers in the UK. This data will be used to calculate the financial contribution of online marketplaces in local authorities' collection and processing of waste electrical equipment fees.

In addition, the Department of Environment also stated that a new category of electronic devices will be introduced to cover e-cigarettes, ensuring that the costs of collecting and processing e-cigarettes are fairly borne by the producers.

Spanish newspaper El Confidencial interviewed Fred Monteiro, Regional Director for Americas and Europe at British American Tobacco (BAT). Monteiro said BAT supports setting regulatory limits for nicotine products but opposes Spain’s proposed 0.99mg nicotine-per-pouch limit, arguing that such a restriction could affect adult smokers’ transition to alternatives. He said nicotine regulation should be based on scientific evidence and harm reduction principles. Monteiro also said smoke-free products now account for around 25% of BAT’s Americas and Europe business and nearly 30% of its Europe business
