UK Parliament to Vote on Legislation to Create Tobacco-Free Generation
UK Parliament to vote on legislation today, aiming to create the world's first smoke-free generation by banning tobacco sales to under-15s.

According to the official UK government website, the British Parliament will vote today (16th) on legislation to prevent future generations from being harmed by tobacco. Under the proposed law, it would be illegal to sell tobacco products to individuals born after January 1, 2009 (those currently aged 15 or younger). Those who are currently legally allowed to purchase tobacco products will still be able to do so in the future. If the legislation passes, the UK will be the first country to create a "smoke-free generation".

This bill will help achieve the UK Prime Minister's commitment to creating a "smoke-free generation." The UK government has pledged to increase funding for smoking cessation services over the next five years, significantly increasing investment in local projects to support current smokers in their efforts to quit. The government is also promoting an innovative financial incentive scheme to help all pregnant smokers quit smoking.

This bill will also grant the government new powers to address the issue of youth e-cigarette use by restricting flavors and regulating the sale and packaging of e-cigarettes to reduce their appeal to children.

In order to ensure compliance with the new regulations, trade standards officials will be given new powers to issue on-the-spot fines (fixed penalty notices) to retailers who illegally sell tobacco or e-cigarettes to children. All fines collected will be used for further enforcement actions. The ban is scheduled to go into effect in April 2025.

British Public Health Minister Andrea Leadsom stated, "Smoking is the leading preventable cause of disease, health problems, and death in the UK. Once addicted, quitting is extremely difficult. Our plan aims to save lives, reduce pressure on the NHS, and ensure a brighter future for our children.
