UK Huddersfield Police Crack Down on Illegal Tobacco, Seize $90,000 Worth of Illicit Cigarettes and Vapes

【2Firsts news flash】According to a report from the BBC on July 31, on July 29, West Yorkshire Police teamed up with Trading Standards for a raid in Huddersfield, where they seized illegal cigarettes and e-cigarettes valued at over 67,000 pounds (approximately $90,000).

 

This operation involved surprise inspections of seven stores in the Huddersfield area. According to law enforcement reports, the operation resulted in the seizure of 2,050 packs of cigarettes, 168 packs of 50g of tobacco, 2,030 e-cigarettes, and 604 unlicensed disposable e-cigarettes.

 

This operation is one of a series of crackdowns on organized crime in the Huddersfield area, aimed at cutting off its sources of income and prosecuting individuals involved in activities such as drug trafficking. According to statistics, from September 2024 to July 2025, the Huddersfield police have arrested 85 people, executed 15 search warrants, and seized approximately £230,000 (around $300,000) worth of drugs.

 

Sheriff Rebecca Calpin stated that in 2025, a significant amount of work is being done in the Kirklys area to combat organized crime, with recent search warrants being just a part of these efforts. She mentioned that funds from illegal e-cigarette and tobacco sales are often used to fund organized crime, and that these illegal products pose a greater risk to public health. Testing has found that these e-cigarettes have higher nicotine levels, are unregulated and untested, and may be particularly harmful to young people.
