"Nicotine-Free" e-cigarettes contain nicotine

Some UK e-cigarettes labeled as nicotine-free found to contain nicotine, potentially trapping consumers in addictive cycle, warns Trading Standards.

Consumers in the UK have been warned that some e-cigarette products claiming to be "nicotine-free" actually contain nicotine, The Sun reported.

Trade standards teams in the southwestern UK, Salford, and Berkshire tested 76 products claiming to be nicotine-free e-cigarettes and found that more than one eighth (13%) of the products were found to contain nicotine.

According to the National Standards Administration, the nicotine content in these e-cigarette liquids ranges from 0.06 mg/mL to 27.02 mg/mL, equivalent to the nicotine content in a pack of 20 cigarettes.

Additionally, all ten types of e-cigarettes exceeded the allowable limit for e-liquid content, with two of them also surpassing the limits for both e-liquid quantity and nicotine concentration.

Michael Bichard, the Chairman of the UK National Trading Standards Board, stated that,

"E-cigarettes without nicotine can be an effective tool for quitting smoking and reducing nicotine dependence. However, these research findings suggest that if people unknowingly purchase this highly addictive substance, they may actually continue to fall into the cycle of addiction."

He also called on vendors to be vigilant in the products they sell,

"Companies should be aware that e-cigarettes falsely claiming to be nicotine-free are circulating, and they should ensure that they are not breaking the law by selling products with false advertisements, especially when importing goods or acting as the main distributor in the National Trading Standards."

Hounslow Crackdown Seizes £33,000 of Illegal Vapes and Combustible Cigarettes

Hounslow Council’s Trading Standards team, working with Metropolitan Police units, conducted test purchases across the borough and found seven premises selling illegal tobacco. Subsequent raids at 16 premises in Chiswick, Feltham and Hounslow High Street seized 4,859 illegal vapes (≈£30,000), 3,806 combustible cigarettes (≈£3,000), 16kg of shisha and 11kg of chewing tobacco. Offences included oversized tanks, over-strength nicotine, and unregistered products.
