Brazil Health Authority to Reevaluate Ban on E-Cigarettes
Brazil's health regulator ANVISA plans to reassess the ban on e-cigarettes, including pods and vapes, on April 17.

According to Brazilian media Olhar Digital, the Brazilian Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) plans to reassess the ban on e-cigarettes. This discussion will include e-cigarettes, pods, and vapes, and the assessment will take place on April 17th (Wednesday).

As early as 2009, e-cigarettes and unheated tobacco have been banned for sale in Brazil. In 2019, ANVISA revisited these products, with the report being delivered by the agency's president Antonio Barra. In December 2023, ANVISA conducted a public consultation to evaluate whether to continue the ban on these products, receiving a total of 13,390 feedback responses.

The department will compile a revised version of the text based on the data collected, expected to be submitted next week. However, the final decision may take longer, as more time may be needed for evaluating the new proposal and accommodating requests for postponement, with some agency members indicating that the original ban may remain in place.

According to last year's public consultation results, 37% of people support the e-cigarette ban, while 59% are against the ban or have reservations about sales of e-cigarettes. Among healthcare professionals, 61% agree with the ban, while 32% hold opposing views.
