Brazilian State Legislature Approves Bill to Ban E-cigarettes in Schools
Brazilian state of Sergipe approves bill to ban e-cigarettes in public and private schools, aiming to raise awareness of health risks.

According to a report from Faxaju on April 11th, the Legislative Council of Sergipe, Brazil approved a bill numbered 53/2024 on Thursday (April 11th) aimed at banning e-cigarettes in public and private schools in the state. The bill was proposed by state representative Cristiano Cavalcante.

 

The main topics of the proposal include the importance of disease prevention, the impact of smoking and e-cigarette use, etc. The campaign for the bill will take place during the week of World No Tobacco Day on May 31st.

 

The legislator explained, "The World Health Organization estimates that about one-third of the adult population smokes. Additionally, the use of e-cigarettes among young people is also increasing. Therefore, it is extremely necessary to have this discussion in the classroom as a public policy to increase awareness of tobacco and e-cigarettes among the public, especially school communities.

South Korea's Ministry of Gender Equality and Family said on September 14 that it plans to designate unmanned e-cigarette stores as businesses where minors are prohibited from entering or working. Operators would be required to verify customers' ages and display notices restricting access by minors. The proposal is open for public comment through October 6.
