Call for Permanent Ban on Sale and Use of E-cigarettes in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa health department calls for a permanent ban on the use and sale of e-cigarettes and vaping devices.

According to a report by Urdu Point News on January 29th, the public health department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has called for a complete and permanent ban on the use and sale of e-cigarettes and e-cigarette vaporizers in order to promote public health and sustainable tobacco control.

The non-governmental organization Blue Veins held consultations with the public health department to discuss the temporary ban imposed by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial government on e-cigarettes and e-cigarette vaporizers. The discussions aimed to explore future strategies and determine how to proceed following the decisions outlined in the notice issued by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial government.

The notice mandates all deputy mayors to enforce a ban on the sale of e-cigarettes and e-cigarette vaporizers to individuals under the age of 21. It further requires the cessation of sales and storage within a 50-meter radius of educational institutions within 60 days.

The consultation led by Haroon Saleem, the Director of the Department of Health of the Assistant Mayor, has received unanimous praise, with all participants agreeing that a ban on the sale and storage of e-cigarettes and e-cigarette vaporizers across the province is necessary.

The prompt solution by the provincial government to ban e-cigarettes and e-cigarette vaporizers has been highly praised by stakeholders. They commend the government for taking decisive action, which demonstrates its commitment to public health, particularly the welfare of young people. Assistant Mayor Haroon Saleem emphasized, "The district and provincial governments are dedicated to protecting citizens from the harmful effects of tobacco and nicotine. We will take all necessary measures to enforce this ban and safeguard public health.

Despite e-cigarettes and vaping devices being touted as safer alternatives to traditional cigarettes and smoking cessation tools, it is important to note that there is no scientific evidence to support these claims. These products contain nicotine, a highly addictive substance that challenges the tobacco industry's claims of harm reduction.

Sana Ahmad from the social non-governmental organization (Blue Veins) emphasized the importance of comprehensive legislation. She stated, "We must adopt legislation that takes into account the opinions of all stakeholders to ensure that the laws we implement are effective, comprehensive, and beneficial to the well-being of our community.

Mian Ateeq, a public health expert representing the Alliance for Sustainable Tobacco and Nicotine Control, has stated that the ban on e-cigarettes and vaping devices is a significant milestone in ensuring public health safety. However, he emphasizes the importance of maintaining this momentum and establishing a comprehensive regulatory framework to address all aspects pertaining to tobacco and nicotine control.
