Decline in Smoking Habits in Switzerland, Especially Among Youth
Swiss smoking rates decline from 2017 to 2022, with 24% still smoking; e-cigarette users among youth rise to 17%.

According to a recent report by Landbote, the Swiss Federal Statistical Office announced on Tuesday (2nd) that the proportion of smokers in Switzerland has decreased from 2017 to 2022, with 24% of people aged 15 and above still smoking.


According to the definition provided by the statistics bureau, e-cigarettes are not classified under the category of "smoking". In 2022, e-cigarette users among the youth population (aged 15-24) account for 17%.


In addition to e-cigarettes, water pipes or chewing tobacco (Snus) are also popular among young people who want to emulate smoking behavior.


In addition, the gender gap has narrowed, with the smoking rate among men decreasing from 37% to 27%. The proportion of female smokers has also decreased from one-quarter to one-fifth. However, a survey found that the proportion of female smokers aged 65 and older has increased.

A cross-sectional analysis based on the US NHANES 2021–2023 cycle, including 6,262 participants aged over 12, found that compared with people who neither smoke nor vape, those who smoke and/or use e-cigarettes had a higher prevalence of elevated blood pressure and hypertension. After full adjustment, smoking/vaping was associated with elevated blood pressure (aOR 1.34) and hypertension (aOR 1.46), and with a 1.05 mmHg higher diastolic blood pressure.
