Geelong City Joins "Smoke-Free Vic" Project with $200K Grant
Geelong City in Australia joins "Smoke-Free Vic" project, receiving $200,000 in e-cigarette prevention subsidy to lead regional efforts.

According to recent reports by Mirage.News, the city of Geelong in Australia has recently joined the "Smoke-free Victoria" initiative and received a $200,000 e-cigarette prevention grant. They will lead the Southwest Barwon e-cigarette prevention alliance in the future and collaborate with various local government regions, health services, and communities to design activities aimed at increasing awareness of the harms of e-cigarettes among young people.

Smoke-Free Vic" is a new $2 million initiative launched by the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation VicHealth in Australia's Victoria state, working with over 40 organizations to reduce the use of e-cigarettes among young people. Named "Smoke-Free Vic," the initiative will involve collaboration from 29 local councils, 5 universities, 5 sports organizations and teams, the Alcohol and Drug Foundation, Quit Victoria, and the Victorian government. Through the collective efforts of these groups, community members aged 12 to 25 will be involved in planning activities to raise awareness about the dangers of e-cigarettes among young people.

Geelong City Councillor Christine Couzens stated:

E-cigarettes pose a serious threat to the health of young people. Involving individuals aged 12 to 25 in the design of projects can significantly increase the likelihood of their peers receiving information about the dangers of e-cigarettes.

According to SGST on August 26, 2026, Australia’s Coalition Illegal Tobacco Taskforce released a report recommending an up to 80% cut in tobacco excise to reduce the appeal of the illicit tobacco market. The report claimed organised crime groups now control about 80% of Australia’s tobacco market and argued that high excise rates have widened the price gap between legal and illegal products. The recommendation remains a policy proposal and has not been adopted by the Australian government, which said its focus remains on enforcement, compliance and additional resources.
