Oregon Court Urged to Delay Implementation of Tobacco Ban

The Multnomah County ban on flavored tobacco set to take effect in 2024 faces an emergency motion to delay execution.

According to KOIN news, the flavored tobacco ban in Multnomah County, Oregon has already been approved by county commissioners as of late 2022 and is expected to take effect on January 1, 2024. However, the Oregon Court of Appeals has filed an urgent motion to stay the execution.

When the ban was initially implemented last year, former commissioner Susheela Jayapal and other county leaders stated, "There are still too many children and young people exposed to these products.

Former committee chairman Deborah Kafoury believed that the ban would "save lives" and prevent current adolescents from initiating tobacco or e-cigarette use.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States has reported that young individuals who use e-cigarettes are more likely to transition to smoking conventional cigarettes in the future.

Some local businesses with a future-focused approach have expressed their desire to continue operating during the trial. Mutonomah County may possibly agree to voluntarily suspend the enforcement of this law during the appeal period and ultimately make a final ruling.
