Poland Considers Increasing Tobacco Consumption Tax to Combat Addiction
Poland's finance minister considers raising consumption tax on tobacco products, citing concerns over high nicotine concentrations and youth addiction risks.

According to Portal Spozywczy, on December 18th, Polish Finance Minister Andrzej Domański stated that the Ministry of Finance is considering raising the consumption tax on tobacco products such as nicotine pouches. The ministry is currently analyzing the situation in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.


The minister stated that the Ministry of Health is concerned about the high concentration of nicotine products, and the Ministry of Finance is conducting a detailed analysis. Many young people are attracted to these brightly colored disposable products, which could lead to addiction. Although some people refer to these products as "innovative products," the minister believes this is just a clever PR tactic.


The minister stated during a media questioning session that in tackling the issue of nicotine products, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Health need to work closely together to conduct a comprehensive analysis and make responsible decisions. He pointed out that the government's role is not to ban everything, as adults have the right to choose any products they want. However, it is important to note that the usage of these products among young people is increasing.

The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network said West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey has signed House Bill 5691 into law, directing USD 2.9 million from the Juul settlement to youth tobacco prevention and programs that help people quit. The bill is a supplemental appropriation measure, and the Legislature’s bill history shows it passed the House on March 11, passed the Senate on March 13 and was sent to the governor on March 18.
