Reducing Tobacco Smoke Exposure to Alleviate COPD Burden
WHO report highlights the urgent need for public health measures to reduce tobacco smoke exposure and alleviate COPD burden.

The latest "Tobacco Knowledge Overview" from the World Health Organization highlights the importance of reducing exposure to tobacco smoke in order to alleviate the burden of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It emphasizes the urgent need for public health measures. The report identifies smoking as the primary risk factor for COPD, contributing to airway inflammation, structural changes, and lung damage, accounting for approximately 70% of global COPD cases.

The Consumer Protection Agency of Neuquén Province, Argentina, reiterated on September 24 that the ban on the import, distribution, marketing and advertising of e-cigarettes, similar devices and related accessories is fully effective. The restriction also covers "heated tobacco products" based on Resolution No. 565/2023 of the Ministry of Health and Regulation No. 3226/2011 of ANMAT.

Mexico’s National Tobacco Industry Council (Conainta) has raised concerns over a federal proposal to increase the Special Tax on Production and Services (IEPS) on cigarettes and nicotine products by more than 30% starting in 2026, and to levy up to a 200% tax on alternative nicotine products.
