According to a report by the US media outlet Free Republic on January 4th, Republican members of the House of Representatives are urging the Biden administration to withdraw the proposal to ban "menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars," arguing that such a regulation may provide a "huge opportunity" for Mexican drug cartels.

According to reports, on December 11th, nine Republican lawmakers pointed out in a letter to the White House that Mexican drug cartels have "expanded their operations, including cigarette smuggling and sales." The group has issued a warning to President Biden, stating that the proposed ban on menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars could potentially create opportunities for drug cartels and other criminal organizations to increase the smuggling of tobacco products at the US border.

The letter was drafted by West Virginia State Representative Carol Miller (R-WV).
