Rising Concern: One in Four Australian Youth Use Nicotine Pouches
A quarter of Australian youth are using nicotine pouches, with concerns rising about the black market and youth addiction.

According to a report by Mirage News on September 26th, the latest survey shows that one quarter of Australian young people use nicotine pouches.

Associate Professor Michelle Jongenelis from the University of Melbourne recently published a study in the journal "Substance Use and Misuse" that surveyed nearly 1600 adolescents and adults aged 16 to 39. The research found that one in five participants had used nicotine pouches in the past 30 days. Despite it being illegal to purchase or sell nicotine pouches without a prescription in Australia, one-third of the survey participants reported buying these products from tobacco retailers.

Our research findings indicate the need to begin monitoring this new product, understanding its usage patterns, and how young people are acquiring them.

As expected, with e-cigarettes receiving widespread attention, the industry and its retail alliances have quietly begun to promote and sell a new addictive product to young Australians. Nicotine pouches are discreet, come in various flavors, and are appealing to young people for these reasons. They are being illegally sold by tobacco merchants, much like e-cigarettes.

Jones said that there is currently limited research on nicotine pouches and their use in Australia.

It is concerning that these addictive products are making their way into the hands of teenagers. The government should be wary of the industry and its retail allies attempting to attract the next generation. The enforcement of new e-cigarette regulations should also include other illegal nicotine products. National surveillance studies should include monitoring of the use of new nicotine products.

NAS 2026 | Cliff Douglas: Risk Continuum Should Play a Central Role in Tobacco Policy
Cliff Douglas, a veteran U.S. tobacco-control and public health policy figure, told NAS 2026 that the “continuum of risk” should play a central role in tobacco policy. He called for clearer market pathways, stronger risk communication, differentiated regulation and enforcement, and said possible FDA reforms to PMTA reviews could be a “welcome correction” if they create a more efficient, predictable route for scientifically substantiated lower-risk products. South Korea Extends Vape Rules to Unmanned Stores After Bringing Synthetic Nicotine Under Tobacco Law
South Korea Extends Vape Rules to Unmanned Stores After Bringing Synthetic Nicotine Under Tobacco Law
South Korea's Ministry of Gender Equality and Family said on September 14 that it plans to designate unmanned e-cigarette stores as businesses where minors are prohibited from entering or working. Operators would be required to verify customers' ages and display notices restricting access by minors. The proposal is open for public comment through October 6. The move follows an April expansion of South Korea's statutory tobacco definition that brought products made with natural or synthetic nicotine under the Tobacco Business Act. Nicotine-free liquids and products using nicotine analogues such as 6-methylnicotine, however, remain an emerging regulatory issue.

HG Innovation, linked to IMiracle and ELFBAR, wins China patent for 6-methylnicotine salts covering vaping and oral products
HG Innovation Limited has been granted a Chinese invention patent covering 6-methylnicotine salt formulations and their use in oral and vaping products. The technology forms salts between 6-methylnicotine and alicyclic carboxylic acids, with granted claims extending to oral products, atomization substrates and electronic atomization devices. Applicant-generated tests reported differences in oxidation stability, in-vitro cytotoxicity and aerosol heavy-metal performance compared with selected benzoate or lactate controls. HG Innovation is directly linked to the broader IMiracle and ELFBAR business network.
