Russia proposes ban on tobacco sales to under 21s, to protect youth's health and well-being, aiming for a healthier society.

According to Russian news website today, on May 22, Russia has proposed a ban on selling tobacco to individuals under the age of 21. Irina Volynets, a children's rights advocate from Tatarstan, emphasized that the purpose of this proposal is to protect the health and well-being of young people and to build a healthier and more stable society.

Irina Volynets has proposed this idea to Anna Kuznetsova, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma, and called on the Deputy Speaker of the lower house of the State Duma to initiate the drafting of relevant legislation. She emphasized that the health and well-being of young people are key to driving social reform towards a healthier and more stable society.

New Zealand Associate Health Minister Casey Costello Warns on Illicit Cigarettes as Legal Tobacco Sales Halve Over Decade
New Zealand Associate Health Minister Casey Costello said legal tobacco sales in the country have fallen by more than half over the past decade, with sales declining more than 20% in 2025 compared with the previous year. She warned that the decline may not fully reflect lower smoking rates, as increased availability of illicit cigarettes could also be contributing. The government said it would continue strengthening tobacco and vape retail enforcement while monitoring the impact of illicit tobacco on public health and tax revenue.
