South Korea Parliament Fails to Pass Tobacco Industry Law Amendment

South Korean Parliament's proposal to include synthetic nicotine in tobacco regulation failed to pass in Economic Committee.

According to N.News on February 18th, the revision of the Tobacco Business Act aiming to regulate synthetic nicotine did not pass the review of the Economic and Financial Committee of the South Korean National Assembly.

The National Congress planned to hold a meeting of the Economic and Financial Committee on the 18th to review the revision of the Tobacco Law, with a focus on expanding the definition of tobacco from "tobacco leaves" to "tobacco and nicotine" in order to include e-cigarettes that use synthetic nicotine. However, the revision was ultimately not passed.

Song Eon-seok, a member of the National Power Party and chairman of the Planning and Finance Committee, expressed disappointment during a full committee meeting following the Economic and Finance Subcommittee. " Today, we discussed the Tobacco Industry Law within the Economic and Finance Subcommittee, but unfortunately, due to differences in opinions, the proposal failed to pass. I urge all parties to quickly negotiate with the government to expedite the deliberation process and find a solution.
