Controversy over Tobacco Tax Amendment in Argentine National Congress
Argentinian Congress sparks controversy with passage of controversial amendment to tobacco tax law, raising rates and facing challenges.

According to Argentine media CBA24n, on May 6th, the Argentine Parliament recently caused controversy by passing certain provisions of the "Ground Law". The most controversial part is the amendment to the tobacco tax.

This clause stipulates:

Increase domestic tobacco tax from 70% to 73%. Set specific tax rates for e-cigarettes, even though they are banned.

The official announcement reveals that the amendment bill was passed with 82 votes in favor, 77 votes against, and 69 abstentions. However, the Pylenism group and district have raised objections to the voting results in the House of Representatives. They claim that there were many "counting errors" in the results.

If the voting error is confirmed, the result will be 80 in favor and 80 against, with Speaker of the House Martin Menem responsible for breaking the tie. In addition, the handling of the tobacco tax provision could have significant implications for Argentine law, as it may necessitate judicial review of the proposal, potentially even leading to the bill being vetoed.
