Ireland Ranks 4th in EU for Young People's E-cigarette Use, More than EU Average
A global report ranks Ireland fourth in youth e-cigarette use among EU countries, raising concerns about smoking rates.

According to ITV on December 26th, a global report has found that Ireland ranks fourth in the European Union for the rate of e-cigarette use among young people.

According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Health at a Glance report, Ireland's adolescent health data was analyzed. The report shows that tobacco use, harmful alcohol consumption, malnutrition, lack of physical activity, and obesity are significant contributors to the disease burden and mortality rates in European Union countries.

The report found that the smoking rate among 15-year-olds in Ireland is 7%, one of the lowest in the EU. Regarding the use of e-cigarettes, the report suggests that it could be a "potential smoking cessation tool," but it could also "particularly in young people, lead to smoking." Data from 2022 shows that over 10% of young people aged 15-24 and over 5% of adults regularly use e-cigarettes in Ireland, compared to EU averages of 2.7% and 2.1% respectively.

Irish Minister for Public Health, Colm Burke, stated that...

Ireland has long been at the forefront of reducing smoking rates worldwide, and efforts are still underway to achieve the vision of a smoke-free Ireland, including raising the minimum age for tobacco sales to 21.
