The Negative Effects of Smoking on Skin and Health
A recent survey by Progress Hub revealed that 12.6% of Brazilian adults smoke, lower than the global average by 7%.

According to a report by Osul on September 8th, a recent survey released by the Progress Hub platform shows that 12.6% of adults in Brazil smoke, which is 7% lower than the global average, based on the implementation of the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

A report released by the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD) states that smoking can negatively impact the health of the skin, hair, and nails. The toxins in tobacco can damage collagen and elastin proteins and cause oxidative stress, leading to accelerated aging.

In addition, e-cigarettes also bring serious health risks. Heitor de Sá Gonçalves, president of the SBD, emphasized that

Studies have shown that e-cigarettes pose potential risks to public health, especially among young people. They not only impact skincare but also have the potential to damage multiple organs, including the lungs, leading to serious respiratory problems.

Aline Bressan, coordinator of the Dermatology and Internal Medicine Department, explains that in addition to promoting premature aging, the chemicals in e-cigarette liquid can cause redness and allergic reactions in the skin, delay healing, and worsen existing inflammatory skin conditions such as acne.

Toxins accumulation can also lead to issues such as melasma, thinning hair, weak and yellowing nails.

The Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD) and 79 medical institutions, including the Brazilian Medical Association (AMB) and the Brazilian Society of Pulmonology and Tuberculosis (SBPT), jointly signed a letter this week opposing Bill No. 5008 of 2023. The bill attempts to allow the regulated sale of e-cigarettes in Brazil.

This letter has been submitted to the Senate committee, highlighting the opposition of various medical institutions.

Gonzalves stated that,

We believe that legislation should protect public health, so we have joined forces with other groups to oppose the sale of products that lack safety evidence.
