Mexico Federal Congress Bans E-cigarettes and Fentanyl Misuse

Mexico's Congress committee bans e-cigarettes and illegal fentanyl use, amending the Political Constitution to protect public health.

On January 8th, the Mexican Federal Congress Standing Committee announced during a meeting that they will be adding a fifth item to Article 4 and a second item to Article 5 of the Political Constitution, prohibiting the use of e-cigarette products and the illegal use of fentanyl.

Previously, the Mexican Senate Plenary Session approved the above-mentioned bill with a vote of 110 in favor, 5 against, and 2 abstentions, clearly prohibiting the production, distribution, and sale of e-cigarettes, all types of e-cigarette devices, and other similar devices.

Senator Gerardo Fernández Noroña, who serves as the chairman of the permanent committee, stated during a meeting that the declaration was released after tallying majority votes from various states and the Mexico City parliament. In order to protect public health, the constitutional provisions will be revised and submitted to the federal government for action.

Previously, the Secretary General of the Standing Committee and Congresswoman Magdalena del Socorro Núñez Monreal read out the relevant letter from the Senate, confirming the receipt of 22 affirmative votes from various parliamentary bodies.

According to the revised constitution, in order to protect the public's right to health, the law will punish any activities related to e-cigarettes and similar devices, as well as the production, distribution, and sale of toxic substances, chemical precursors, illegal use of fentanyl, and other unauthorized synthetic drugs.
